What is the Pipe Test?

The test helps determine whether a man’s erectile dysfunction is due to physical issues (like nerve or blood flow problems) or psychological factors (like stress or anxiety).

How is it Done?

There are two common ways this test is performed:

  1. Morning Erection Test (Nocturnal Penile Tumescence Test - NPT)

    • Men naturally experience erections during REM sleep.

    • If a man wakes up with an erection but struggles to achieve one during sexual activity, it suggests a psychological cause (stress, anxiety, depression).

    • If there are no morning erections, it may indicate an underlying physical problem such as poor blood flow, nerve damage, or hormonal imbalances.

  2. Stamp Test (Basic At-Home Test)

    • A simple at-home method to check for nocturnal erections.

    • A roll of postage stamps is wrapped around the flaccid penis before sleeping.

    • If the stamp ring is broken in the morning, it indicates that nocturnal erections occurred, suggesting a psychological cause.

    • If the stamp ring remains intact, it may suggest a physical issue affecting erections.

When to Seek Medical Help?

If a man consistently fails the Pipe Test (no morning or nocturnal erections), it is recommended to consult an andrologist for further evaluation, which may include:

  • Doppler Ultrasound: To assess blood flow in the penile arteries.

  • Hormonal Tests: To check testosterone and other hormone levels.

  • Neurological Tests: To examine nerve function related to erections.
