What is Onco-Sexuality?

Onco-sexuality refers to the impact of cancer and its treatments on sexual function, fertility, and overall sexual well-being. Men undergoing cancer treatment often experience challenges such as erectile dysfunction (ED), loss of libido, infertility, and psychological distress, which can affect their intimate relationships and quality of life.

Why and How Does It Happen?

  • Cancer Type & Location: Prostate, testicular, bladder, and colorectal cancers directly affect male reproductive organs and sexual function.

  • Surgery & Radiation Therapy: Procedures like prostatectomy or pelvic radiation can damage nerves and blood vessels, leading to erectile dysfunction or loss of ejaculation.

  • Chemotherapy & Hormonal Therapy: These treatments can reduce testosterone levels, leading to low libido, fatigue, and fertility issues.

  • Psychological Impact: Cancer diagnosis and treatment-related stress, depression, and body image concerns can reduce sexual desire and confidence.

  • Nerve & Vascular Damage: Cancer treatments may impair blood flow and nerve function, making it difficult to achieve or maintain an erection.

  • Fertility Challenges: Chemotherapy and radiation can affect sperm production, sometimes leading to temporary or permanent infertility.
